Ex-serviceman arrested at airport
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD:
The police arrested on Wednesday an ex-serviceman at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport for allegedly attempting to fly to Canada with forged travel documents while a woman was deported from the US for flying there with a tampered passport.
A former driver in the Army, Mewa Singh of Amritsar district in Punjab came to the airport to board a flight bound for Toronto in Canada. The immigration authorities found the passport was tampered with after examining it under ultra-violet lamps.
Singh subsequently confessed to officials that the passport belonged to one Rakesh Basanth and was arranged by a broker, Ramesh. He stated that he had paid Rs. 5.5 lakh to Ramesh to send him to Canada and provide a job there. The deported passenger Rozeena, 29, belonged to Siddipet of Medak district. Investigation revealed her relatives had fixed her marriage with someone in New York and arranged a forged passport. She boarded the flight with the passport belonging to one Sagar Yashodara of West Godavari. However, the New York airport authorities found her passport was forged and deported her to Hyderabad.
