dated September 3, 1955: Tension in Gaza

Urgent consultations were under way in Egyptian and Israeli capitals on September 1 to bring an end to the hostilities in the Gaza strip between the two countries, which resulted in the loss of two Egyptian planes and an Israeli reprisal raid. In Jerusalem, Gen. Burns, Chief of the UN Armistice Commission, appealed to Egypt and Israel to accept his plan to end the 11 days of bitter fighting. In Cairo, a spokesman at the office of the Egyptian Premier said Gen. Burns informed Egypt that Israel wished to stop "all aggressive actions along the truce line."
