Close pits after irrigation borewell work: Collector

THENI: : Deep pits dug on farms for irrigation borewells should be closed after completion of work. panchayat union commissioners should monitor proper execution of this work in all villages, said Collector Rajesh Lakhoni.

Addressing the 14th district planning committee meeting held at the Collectorate here on Friday, he said the panchayat union commissions should take the responsibility.

Farm owners should also keep caution boards near borewell site while drilling work was in progress to alert people and children, he said.

Elaborating various development projects, Mr. Lakhoni advised farmers to use tissue cultured saplings and seedlings to boost production.

They should also practise modern cultivation and post-harvesting techniques.

Already, proposals were sent to the Government for construction of the Vowval Thurai dam. No objection certificates issued by the Collectors of Madurai, Dindigul and Theni districts were also forwarded to the Government for approval of the project.

Construction work would begin after obtaining no objection certificate from the Government.

The Horticulture College and Research Institute Dean, S. Anbu, said that the institute had been intensifying research on mango exports.

There was a growing demand for sapota variety, PKM-1. The HCRI had sold 60,000 saplings of PKM-1 variety to farmers so far. Value-addition was possible in hybrid variety, sapota PKF-2. This variety could be converted into powder for exports.

The District Registrar, V. Nattar, said that a monitoring committee had been constituted to assess the market value of land in the district.

The committee had covered 42 villages so far. Even after reduction of land registration fees, the district registration office had earned Rs.15 crores so far.

The DRDA Project Officer, G. Mutu Meenal, chairmen of five municipalities, the Assistant Director for Panchayats, J. Jayaraman, and others took part.
