PONDICHERRY: "Environmental education must start at the school level. We must catch them young, while their minds are still fresh and teach children love Nature and protect the environment," said the Lt. Governor M M Lakhera, while receiving the first copy of the textbook of "Environmental Studies," which has been brought out by the University Grants Commission, following a Supreme Court order in 2001. The textbook, which has been prepared by a committee of experts headed by Erach Bharucha and is presently available in English, will also be made available in regional languages including, Tamil and Hindi, said Chandini Rao, publisher, Biodiversity division, Orient Longman, an associate of Universities Press that has published the textbook. Krishnadev Rao, director, Orient Longman and Prema Narayanan, editor, were also present on the occasion. The Lt Governor suggested that each school should adopt a national hero and have his or her photos, their life history and the details of their sacrifices to the nation.
