`Japan keen on investing in the country'

Staff Reporter

Would invest in IT sector too, says Consul-General

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: India is an emerging global power and investors from Japan are eager to invest in Information Technology and manufacturing sectors in the country, according to Consul-General of Japan Yoshiaki Kodaki.

Mr. Kodaki was in the city in connection with the inauguration of the Japan Cultural and Information Centre being set up under the Thiruvananthapuram sub- centre of Japan-based Alumini Society of Association for Overseas Technical Scholarships. Interacting with mediapersons after calling on Governor R.L. Bhatia on Friday, the Consul-General said Japan was amazed over the growth of the Indian economy and the younger generation in his country was "interested" in India. India is the major recipient of funds from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and this shows the faith of the JBIC in the country, he added. Mr. Kodaki said business cooperation, education and tourism are the other areas in which Japanese investors have evinced interest. He said there was lack of information in his country about India and the investment opportunities here. He hoped that the information gap between the two countries would be bridged in the coming days.

The Consular General said a proposal to observe 2007 as Indo-Japan Cultural Year was under the active consideration of the two Governments. A decision in this regard would be taken soon, he added. S. Ratnakumar, president of the Thiruvananthapuram sub-centre of Alumini Society of AOTS, said a proposal to set up a Japanese village in the city to promote mutual friendly and cultural relations between the two countries was under active consideration. The plan is to seek the support of Japan and a proposal in this regard would be submitted to Mr. Kodaki. A library has also been set up on the premises of the centre at Eenchakkal for the members and the public. The centre has decided to conduct a four-month short-term course in Japanese language at the Institute of Japanese Studies set up under the centre.
