PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry Government plans to recruit more constables and form a separate company to deal with natural calamities, Inspector-General of Police P.R. Meena said. "Around 124 constables will be recruited in the coming days to strengthen the force," he said in his address at the passing out parade of 16th batch of Recruit Police Constables here on Saturday. A company would be formed within the Pondicherry Armed Police force to undertake rescue and other measures during natural calamities. The company Circle Rescue Company would be given special training to deal with such situations, he said. The police requested the Government to increase the number of women constables, Mr. Meena said. A firing range for training would be established once the Government identified the land, he said.
`Law and order satisfactory'
Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said that though the "law and order is satisfactory there are some evil forces trying to create problems." "You should be always on the guard and foil attempts by such evil elements. Don't shrug your responsibilities", the Chief Minister told the recruits. He said the Government would take all steps to modernise the force. Earlier, 85 Recruit Police Constables (RPC), including 16 women recruits, passed out at the function. Of the 85 RPC, 41 persons previously employed as Home Guards were absorbed as constables on the basis of 25 per cent reservation for Home Guards in the recruitment of constables. Thirty-eight were recruited directly and another six appointed on compassionate grounds.
Certificates given
The Chief Minister presented certificates to those who stood first in examinations conducted for various subjects during the training programme.
