BAC sweeps the board

BANGALORE: It was a one horse race for the overall sweepstakes as Basavangudi Aquatic Centre swept the board with 572 points in the State senior aquatics championship which concluded at the KC Reddy swim centre pool here on Saturday. The host, KCR finished a distant second with 129 points. BAC won the men and women's team titles as well with 265 and 293 points respectively.

Shikha Tandon of KCR and Rehan Poncha of BAC emerged as the best swimmers. The two National stars finished the meet in a blaze of glory with Shikha bettering her own National record of 31.32 seconds set in 2003, with an impressive 31.13 seconds in the 50 metre backstroke. Shikha also won the 100m freestyle and thus topped the women's section with 650 points which included five golds, with one National and two meet records.

The talented teenager from BAC, Shubha Chittaranjan, finished second to Shikha with 631 points with three golds , two silvers, with a meet and a National record. Rehan reigned supreme in the men's section with 233 points, with four golds and a silver with four meet marks.

As many as 20 meet marks were bettered in the three-day championship, which came to a colourful end with Mr. Chenraj Jain, chairman Jain Group of Institutions, giving away the prizes.

Sandeep 28.88; 100m breaststroke: J.P. Arjun (BAC) 1:09.83; 200m breaststroke: J.P. Arjun 2:38.18; 4x100m freestyle relay: BAC `B' 3:50.15.

Women: 100m freestyle: Shikha Tandon (KCR) 1:00.07; 400m freestyle: Pooja R. Alva 4:55.67; 50m backstroke: Shikha Tandon 31.13 (National record, old: 31.32, NMR, old: 32.10); 50m breaststroke: Prerna Jain (BAC) 38.63; 200m breaststroke: V. Tejaswini 2:54.91; 200m butterfly: Pooja R Alva (BAC) 2:25.11 NMR, old: 2:27.53.

Diving: Men: highboard diving: D. Saravanan (ASC).

Water polo (final): MEG bt BAC 17-5.
