MADURAI: The auditorium was jam-packed as it housed more than 1,000 students, parents and teachers, with anxiety writ large on their faces, an inventive quizmaster. The evening saw a confluence of `young talents.' It was the Madurai regional finals of The Hindu Young World Quiz 2005 at Raja Muthiah Manram, Madurai, on Saturday.

The quiz programme kicked off at 2 p.m. with the first few questions dedicated to Madurai. After the preliminary rounds comprising 25 questions, a `thappattam' of P. Raja with his 10-member group from Panaiyur forced the audience to clap to the thundering beat.

Finally, six teams made it to the stage. The variety in different rounds of mind-twisters on history, wildlife, cinema, sports and everything about India kindled everybody's zeal. Of the six rounds, `Mixed Curry' and `Kaliswari Jugalbandhi' made the show more interesting.

There were, of course, a few questions based on Madurai and on all phases of Indian history and Nobel prizewinners. Even the audience and other participants walked away with cartloads of prizes. The ability of students to keep abreast of current affairs was astonishing.

Raja Muthiah Mandram vibrated with fun and excitement felt by both the winners and losers.

M.A. Uttara, studying in Standard XII, and R. Adhitya of Standard XI of TVS Lakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, bagged the top honours. Uttara said she owed a lot to her teacher the late G.R. Diwakar, who was her mentor and helped her bag honours in all quiz competitions.

K. Riyaz Ahamed and B. Ramprakash of Mahatma Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai, were a bit disappointed because they pressed the buzzer even before the quizmaster, V.V. Ramanan, could finish his question. And with that vanished their hopes of retaining the title.

"I am happy to receive the gift hampers and participation certificate and I am determined to come back to the next competition after preparing for it for a year," said N.K. Sakthi Priya Dharsini, a Standard X student of SPV Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai.

Playback singer Shrinivas added joy to the event with his memorable and popular numbers. A lucky dip was also organised at the venue. The prizes for the winners, sponsored by UTI Mutual Fund, will be sent to them by courier service.
