POLLACHI: : The Minister for Food and Cooperation, Pollachi V. Jayaraman, on Saturday released water from the Aliyar reservoir near here for irrigation.

Farmers happy

The water in the reservoir reached the brim and started overflowing last month following copious inflow into the Parambikulam - Aliyar Project reservoirs as a result of the heavy downpour.

It brought cheer to the farming community, since the reservoir rarely overflowed in the South West Monsoon.

The water flowing through the Aliyar river catered to the requirements of a number of wayside habitations and the drinking water requirements of the Pollachi Municipality.

PAP accord

The water is released to Kerala through the Manakkadavu sluice. As per the PAP accord, Tamil Nadu should release 19.5 tmcft of water to Kerala of which 7.25 tmcft used to be released through the Manakkadavu sluice in the Aliyar river.

The balance 12.3 tmcft used to be released from the Sholayar reservoir in the upper reaches of the Western Ghats. At present 500 cusecs of water is being released to Kerala through the Manakkadavu sluice of the Aliyar river.

B zone irrigation

The water released on Saturday will irrigate 22,000 acres coming under the various canals of the Aliyar Irrigation System.

Under the Aliyar New Irrigation Ayacut scheme, 204 cusecs of water is being released for the B zone of the Pollachi canal for irrigating 11,500 acres, 85 cusecs is released through the A zone of the Vettaikaranpudur canal for irrigating 5,600 acres, 5 cusecs is released through the B zone of the Sethumadai canal for irrigating 2,500 acres and 80 cusecs of water is being released into the B zone of the Aliyar Feeder canal for irrigating 2,600 acres.

Four canals

Water will be released for 90 days as against the scheduled release of 135 days.

The days of release will further be extended depending on the inflow into the reservoirs.

Remaining land

After January 26 next year, the remaining zones of the four canals will get water for the remaining 22,000 acres, officials said.

Opening sluices

The District Collector, S. Kosalaraman; the Chief Engineer of Water Resource Organisation (WRO) of the Public Works Department (PWD), Rangaraj Gupta; the Pollachi Sub-Collector, T. N. Venkatesh; the district panchayat president, K. Sugumaran; the Aliyar Sub-Divisional Officer, M. Krishnan; and the Assistant Engineer, A.
