200 bus shelters to come up in city
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
Commuters have braved the heat for months while waiting for buses in front of the Government General Hospital. It now seems they will not need to brave the rains.
The Public Works Department (PWD) will soon start constructing the shelters. A Government order was issued on Friday to take up the construction at an estimated cost of Rs. 25 lakhs. A letter stating that the work would be taken up by the PWD was sent by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to C. Lakshmi Narain who had filed a public interest litigation petition. The Madras High Court had directed the MTC to take up work on the shelters.
The MTC is planning to set up about 200 shelters throughout the city. Though there are more than 1,000 shelters, many still wait for buses in areas earmarked by the MTC.
