Raid on SBI officials

Special Correspondent

Soiled currency notes were replaced with brown papers in bundles meant for destruction

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday conducted raids on the residential premises of half-a-dozen officials of State Bank of India in Dhanbad and Singhbhum in Jharkhand, and Balia and Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh.

They had allegedly misappropriated about Rs. 1.25 crores, replacing soiled currency with papers of the same size in bundles of various denominations meant for destruction by the RBI, a CBI spokesman said. The searches were made after the CBI registered a case against the accused. The Patna branch of the RBI detected the irregularities and returned the bundles. A scrutiny under the supervision of senior SBI officials revealed the fraud.

During the searches in the houses of the bank officials, including two who were joint custodians of the currency chest, several `incriminating' documents were recovered, the CBI claimed.
