Gujarat keen on having a metro rail

Special Correspondent

Team from State meets BMRC chief

BANGALORE: While Bangalore's metro rail project is bogged down in controversy and conflicting demands, Gujarat is reported to be keen on having mass rapid transit systems for Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

A delegation from that State, led by K. Srinivas, Managing Director of Gujarat Urban Development Company, and Jayant Parimal, Chief Executive Officer of Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board, called on Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation K.N. Srivatsava on Saturday.

The Gujarat team is said to have shown keen interest on the details of the Bangalore metro project and the plans made for its implementation. If due to continued controversy Bangalore is unable to undertake the metro, the central funds sanctioned for it may be sought by Gujarat.

Meanwhile BMRC is said to have lost close to Rs. 40 crores due to cost escalation over the past several weeks since the project was approved.

The current estimate for the five-year project is Rs 6,296 crores, compared with the original estimate of Rs. 4,989 crores, which was overtaken by cost escalation caused by undue delay in starting the work.

Tamil Nadu has also asked the Union Government for a metro rail for Chennai, a city with a long established electric train system.
