Fishermen to gherao Puri Collector's office

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Traditional fishermen living in and around Chilika Lake have said they will gherao the office of the District Collector of Puri on September 21, demanding immediate demolition of illegal prawn culture `gheris' (barricaded enclosures) in the lake.

At a press conference here on Sunday, president of Chilika Mastchyajibee Mahasangha Balaram Das said the fishermen themselves would take up the task of demolishing `gheris' if the administration failed to do so at the earliest.

Mr. Das said the `gheris' created by the non-traditional fishermen and the prawn mafia had encroached upon vast areas of the fishing ground and was spoiling the lake's ecology.
