CHENNAI: Free and open source software will be the flavour of Colombo next week. The Centre of International Cooperation for Computerisation (CICC), a Japanese non-government organisation headquartered in Singapore, and the Information and Communication Agency of Sri Lanka have organised the Asia Open Source Software Symposium from September 6 to 8. Open source software practitioners from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and other Asian countries, including Japan and India, are expected to participate. A representative of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, under the Ministry of Information Technology, will also take part. The symposium itself is one of the many events of the Free and Open Software Week from September 5 to 10. The Software Week is scheduled to culminate on September 10, which is the Software Freedom Day for this year, with a massive open source advocacy programme. Venkataraman Narayanan, consultant for CICC, was in Chennai recently to impress upon the Computer Society of India to participate in the symposium. "The event will promote open source software as a cheap yet equally powerful option when compared to proprietary software. This movement is of importance mainly for developing countries that can save lot of money."
