M.S. Gill speaks up for bus to Nankana Sahib

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: M.S. Gill, Congress Member of Parliament from Punjab, on Saturday expressed despair over the pace in providing connection between Amritsar and Lahore-Nankana Sahib in Pakistan.

Reacting to reports following official level talks between India and Pakistan and move to establish bus services connecting other cities on either side, Dr. Gill said: "I am despondent and so is Punjab. The people of Punjab have been waiting for a bus connecting Amritsar and Nankana Sahib which is the Mecca of the Sikh community." Dr. Gill, a former Chief Election Commissioner, said he had been repeatedly raising this issue with the Prime Minister and other leaders and added, "I am beginning to see a lack of interest in this case to provide this connection."

He welcomed the move to bring another bus connecting Lahore and Sirhind in Punjab which he said has a well-known Muslim shrine.

Dr. Gill said he strongly supported the people to people contact and the Delhi-Lahore bus but question its usefulness for people of Punjab. He said all that Punjab gets is to escort the bus under heavy security since the time it enters the State and till it rolls over into Lahore, Pakistan. Not a single person of Punjab can either get in or get off the bus during the journey. This, he said, was not fair to Punjab.
