BANGALORE: As Bangalore city reeled under the impact of a heavy downpour since Saturday night, at least four persons died and five were injured.

Two of the dead were caught under two thatched houses that collapsed in the Byappanahalli police station limits.

Putting the threadbare infrastructure on the city's outskirts under pressure, the showers flooded several residential areas and had at least two lakes overflowing.

In Malleshpalya in the Krishnarajapuram City Municipal Council, a construction worker, Nagaraj (25), was killed when his house collapsed.

The compound wall of an adjacent cement brick-manufacturing unit had fallen on the house, resulting in the collapse of the house.

While Nagaraj died on the spot, his wife, Lakshmamma, suffered injuries.

Both were asleep when the incident took place at about 12.30 a.m. Lakshmamma was later shifted to a private hospital. The couple were originally from Raichur.

Another construction labourer, Gundamma (35) died when she was caught under the debris of her house in Krishnappa Garden.

Here too, the house collapsed after a portion of the compound wall of the Bharat Earth Movers Limited factory fell on it.

Gundamma, who was sleeping when the incident occurred, died while being shifted to a hospital. The bodies were taken to Bowring Hospital mortuary.

Two unidentified beggars were found dead on the footpath near the Majestic bus station in the Upparpet police station limits on Sunday.

They were apparently drunk and were caught in the heavy downpour, the police said.

34.4 mm rainfall

Both the house collapse incidents were from areas which reported the heaviest rainfall. Byappanahalli is about four kilometres from the airport, where the Meteorological Department recorded a rainfall of 68.8 mm till 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.

The city received 34.4 mm of rainfall from Saturday evening till Sunday morning.

Two persons, Jayaram and his son, Venkatesh, were injured when the roof of their house fell on them on Malleswaram 6th Main on Saturday night. The two were admitted to K.C. General hospital.

At Kalappa Layout in Basavanagar, over 150 houses were flooded as the Dodda Nekkundi Lake overflowed. Residents of Annaiah Reddy Layout near J.P. Nagar were caught off-guard as the Puttenahalli Lake water entered their houses and basements of several apartments nearby. Houses were flooded in Chandrappa Layout in Hebbal, Pai Layout in Krishnarajapuram, SBI Colony, Domlur, Chandrappa Colony in New Byappanahalli, Bande Slum in Azadnagar, low-lying areas in Srinivasanagar, Cambridge Road, Munireddypalya and Nagwarpalya.

Two persons were injured when a hut collapsed in Vijayanagar. A drain overflowed in Jogupalya, while a tree fell on a van in Yeswanthpur.

Trees were uprooted in R.T. Nagar, Yeshwanthpur, Mathikere Main Road, HIG Colony, West of Chord Road, Srinagar, J.B. Nagar and Sadashivanagar.

Child killed

Our Tumkur Staff Correspondent reports:

A one-year-old child died and a man was injured when a house collapsed in heavy rain at Kalkere in Turuvekere taluk of Tumkur district on Sunday.

It is learnt a wall of the house of Shankaraiah collapsed around 6.30 p.m. when he and his family were at home.

Shankaraiah was injured and was taken to hospital. He is said to be recovering. The name of the child was given as Kantaraj.

There was heavy rain in all parts of the district, including Kunigal, Turuvekere and Gubbi.
