dated September 7, 1955: Flood havoc in Orissa

The major portion of Cuttack district was, on September 6, under water as a vital embankment of the Mahanadi, 15 miles east of Cuttack, gave way, swamping about 400 villages and forcing nearly two lakh people out of their homes. The breached embankment, known as the Dalai Ghat, has further extended flood destruction caused by earlier breaches in the Mahanadi, Brahmini and other rivers. The Brahmini, fed by rainfall, overflowed its banks, submerging an area of about 150 square miles.
