KOCHI: The `atham' celebrations by the municipality pales in comparison to the royal ones, says Chembil Arayan Rana Marthandan. Festival celebrations have become a means for the municipality to make money, he says. The Chembil Arayan, who is invited to be a representative of the tradition in flagging off the procession is also not the real one, he alleges. The original Chembil Arayans are the descendants of the army chief of the ruler of erstwhile Travancore, he says. He feels that the `atham' celebrations should be given a better patron and taken over by the District Tourism Promotion Council under the chairmanship of the District Collector.
