Kannur is no longer the town with extensive open grounds it once was. What remains now are patches of what used to be contiguous esplanades. Even those patches of grounds appear to be facing extinction. The Police Maidan, for example, has been under pressure, so to speak, ever since the new traffic police station building was constructed on a corner of the ground facing the main road. The number of vehicles taken into custody by the traffic police is increasing. That will mean more space of the ground, which is being used for organising public functions and fairs, will be encroached for parking both big and small vehicles involved in traffic police cases.
