Letters to the Editor
The unchecked continuation of Arab marriages (girls being married off to Arabs who divorce them within a few days) in Hyderabad is indeed a shame. While legislative measures like compulsory registration of marriages may make the practice difficult, they cannot do away with the social evil unless there is a change in the socio-economic conditions and the mindset of poor parents. All right-thinking Muslims should strengthen and extend the benefits of Zakat to potential victims to enable them to find eligible bachelors. They should dissuade the Qazis from solemnising doubtful nikahs; especially when the brides are coerced to marry more than once.
