Vacant seats in gram panchayats to be filled

Bangalore: The State Election Commission has announced that elections to fill 882 vacant seats in 277 gram panchayats in various districts will be held on October 16. According to the calendar of events announced by the commission on Monday, the elections will be notified on September 27. The last date for filing nominations is October 4. The nominations will be scrutinised the next day. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 7. Votes will be counted and results declared on October 17. — Staff Reporter

Farmer attempts suicide with family

Bidar: A farmer, who was unable to repay his debts, attempted suicide along with his wife and daughter at Khatak Chincholi in Bhalki taluk on Tuesday. Mallappa, 48, his wife Neelamma, 42, and daughter Geeta, 16, are being treated at the district government hospital. Mallappa's condition is serious while the others are out of danger, doctors said.

Mallappa has one hectare of land and two daughters. He could not repay Rs. 50,000 borrowed for his elder daughter's wedding a year ago. Moneylenders reportedly insulted him in public on Tuesday morning. He came home and convinced his wife and daughter to drink pesticide along with him. A case has been registered in the Bhalki Rural police station, police said. — Staff Correspondent

Sindhia to review working of departments

Bangalore: Finance and Industries Minister P.G.R. Sindhia will be undertaking a review of the performance of resource-mobilising departments such as Mines and Geology, Excise, Stamps and Registration and Lotteries and Small Savings between September 15 and 30. Mr. Sindhia told presspersons on Monday that he would also review the functioning of departments such as Home, Health and Social Welfare.

Asked about the unhappiness expressed by Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Basavaraj Horatti over the non-release of funds for the payment zilla panchayat schoolteachers' salaries, he said he will look into it.

Approval has been given for the release of Rs.1.12 crore for the development of 52 border taluks, he added. — Staff Reporter

Rs. 10 crores sought for repairs, rehabilitation

BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has blamed the Urban Development Department and the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) for rain in Bangalore turning into a nightmare for citizens and disrupting normal life.

BJP MLA for Uttarahalli R. Ashok told presspersons here on Tuesday that over 900 houses were submerged at Puttenahalli in J.P Nagar 6th Phase after the local lake overflowed. He asked the Government to immediately sanction Rs. 10 crores for repairing public utilities and for the rehabilitation of people dislocated by the flooding.

He urged the Government to take immediate steps to restore power and drinking water supply in Puttenahalli. — Special Correspondent

Society being formed to showcase Hubli

BANGALORE: A Business Process Outsourcing, IT-Enabled Services and Customer Relationship Management Society headed by the former Chief Secretary B.S. Patil is being set up in Hubli to develop that city as an information technology corridor. It will formally come into being on Friday.

Mr. Patil told presspersons here on Tuesday that the objective of the non-commercial society is to attract investments in industries and showcase the potential of Hubli, Belgaum and Davangere for the overall development of the region.

National seminar on corruption

GULBARGA: Bi Bi Raza Degree College will be hosting a University Grants Commission sponsored two-day National Seminar on "Bane of corruption in public life" here from Sunday. Principal of the college Shameem Surayya said Vice-Chancellor of Solapur University E.S. Swamy will inaugurate the seminar, M.A.K. Kazimi, secretary of Khaja Educational Society, will deliver keynote address, and Vice-Chancellor of Sri Yashwant Rao Chawan Maharashtra Open University Raja Welukar will deliver valedictory address. Two drowned

Raichur: Gundappa, 25, drowned when he entered into a tank along with a herd of cattle and accidentally slipped near Deodurga on Sunday. The Deodurga Police have registered a case.

In an another incident, Giriyemma, 14, drowned after she slipped in a tank at Sasavigera Tanda of Deodurga taluk on Monday. The Deodurga Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Killed in accident

BIJAPUR: A motorcyclist was killed when a lorry hit his vehicle on National Highway 13 near Horthi on Monday night. The police gave the name of victim as Gulappa Eeranna Koti from Ballolli village in Indi taluk.

Inaugurated

Bidar: The Combined Annual Training Camp of the National Cadet Corps Air Squadron was inaugurated in Akka Mahadevi Nursing College in Bidar on Tuesday. Over 185 cadets from Bidar, Raichur and Bellary are participating in the camp. Shantappa Patil, chairman of Bidar Vidya Kendra, stressed the importance of discipline among cadets. Camp Commandant Group Captain S.S. Agarwal encouraged cadets to join the Indian Air Force. — Staff Correspondent

Nati Vaidyas meet

KARWAR: A State-level meet of Nati Vaidyas (practitioner of herbal medicine) was held at Sonda Swarnawalli Mutt recently. Over 140 Nati Vaidyas participated. Gangadharendra Saraswati Swam, seer of the mutt, presided over the meet. The meet urged the State Biodiversity Board and Herbal Medicine Board to document details of herbal plants being used for treating various diseases.

Two killed in accident

MYSORE: Two teenaged boys were killed when the motorcycle on which they were travelling collided with a private bus in Subhash Nagar on the Mysore-Bangalore Road on Monday night. The police identified the victims Asim and Rizwan, both aged 16 years. The motorcycle on which they were travelling collided with a Mysore-bound bus near Dandimaramma Temple in Subhash Nagar. The police has seized the bus and arrested the driver, Kasim. A case has been registered. — Staff Correspondent

Free cancer detection clinic

MYSORE: A free cancer detection clinic has been organised at Preethi Cancer Centre in Lakshmipuram from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on September 8. Woman commits suicide

MYSORE: A woman committed suicide by jumping into the Shimsha near Maddur in Mandya district on Sunday along with her two children.

Police said Saraswathi (35) and her 13-year old daughter Jyothi drowned in the river. However, Saraswathi's 12-year-old son was rescued by labourers working on road widening work on the Mysore-Bangalore highway.

Saraswathi's body has been recovered. Police said Saraswathi took the extreme step as she was dejected with her life. — Staff Correspondent

Warning issued

Chamarajanagar: The Assistant Executive Engineer of Cauvery Niravari Nigam, Attugulipura sub-division, has warned people living along the banks of the Chikkahole to move to safe places as water will be released from the reservoir when it reaches the full level. The inflow into the Chikkahole Reservoir increased to 500 cusecs a day. The outflow into the Suvarnavathy Rreservoir has been maintained at 500 cusecs a day, he said.

MADIKERI: The Sunticoppa Jaycees will organise the Jaycee Week, for the third consecutive year, at the Manjunathaiah-Meenakshamma Kalyana Mantap in Sunticoppa town from September 20, director in-charge of the programme implementation, Shashikant Rai, said. Jaycee family get together would be held on September 22 and Jaycee Bright Smile progamme, where a dental camp would be organised, would be held on September 23.
