Rain damage in Kodagu put at Rs. 39.83 crores

Somwarpet taluk accounts for the highest loss

    MADIKERI: Rain damage in Kodagu district has been estimated at Rs. 39.83 crores, according to official information received here on Tuesday.

    The highest loss estimate comes from Somwarpet taluk at Rs. 12.97 crores, followed by Virajpet taluk with Rs. 10.37 crores and Madikeri taluk with Rs. 7.90 crores. Mangalore Electricity Supply Company has suffered a loss of Rs. 38.24 lakhs, while the Coffee Board estimate for crop loss has been put at Rs. 8.20 crores.

    As many as 334 houses have collapsed or damaged in Somwarpet taluk; the loss has been estimated at Rs. 45 lakhs. The loss to the Revenue Department is Rs. 46.51 lakhs, which included compensation of Rs. 50,000 each to three persons who were electrocuted. Agriculture crop loss in an area of 940.6 hectares is Rs. 37 lakhs and horticulture crop loss in an area of 327 hectares is Rs. 1.74 crores. The loss to property of the Public Works Department is Rs. 4.43 crores and that of the Panchayat Raj engineering wing is Rs. 5.80 crores.

    In Virajpet taluk, 109 houses were damaged amounting to a loss of Rs. 17 lakhs. One person died and two heads of cattle were lost in the taluk. The loss to the Revenue Department is Rs. 18 lakhs. Agriculture crop loss in an area of 453 hectares is put at Rs. 10 lakhs while that of horticulture crop in an area of 267 hectares is estimated at Rs. 1.22 crores.

    The Public Works Department has suffered a loss, mainly to roads and public buildings, of Rs. 3.30 crores while that of the Panchayat Raj engineering wing is Rs. 5.51 crores.

    In Madikeri taluk, 171 houses were damaged and five heads of cattle lost. The loss to the Revenue Department is Rs. 36 lakhs. Agriculture crop loss in an area of 63 hectares is put at Rs. 4.20 lakhs.

    Loss to horticulture crops in an area of 248 hectares is estimated at Rs. 94.72 lakhs. The loss to the Public Works Department is Rs. 1.60 crores and that of the Panchayat Raj engineering wing is Rs. 4.77 crores.

    The Deputy Commissioner's office has disbursed Rs. 20 lakhs to the three tahsildars in the taluks to take up emergency relief works.

    A sum of Rs. 2 lakhs was given as compensation for four human deaths. Of the 614 houses that were damaged, compensation has been given in 349 cases so far. 0A sum of Rs. 1.50 crores each has been approved for the three taluks, running up to Rs. 4.50 crores, to take up various relief works. Most of the works would be over by September.

    According to information, from January 1 till August 31, 2005, Madikeri taluk had received 2,814.6 mm of rainfall, Somwarpet taluk 2,379.8 mm and Virajpet taluk 1,950.5 mm rainfall. Bhagamandala received the highest rainfall of 5104.1 mm.
