AN EMOTIONAL MOMENT: Sarabjit Singh's sister Dalbir Kaur reads out a letter written by him as his wife Sukhpreet Kaur holds his latest photograph at Bhikhiwind village near Amritsar on Tuesday. The letter and photograph were given to the Indian High Commission officials when they met Sarabjit in Lahore jail recently.

BIKHIWIND (AMRITSAR): It was an emotional moment for the family of Sarabjit Singh on Tuesday when they received the first letter from him in two years in this village close to the International Border.

When the envelope was opened, Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur, wife Sukhpreet Kaur and two daughters Swapandeep and Poonam were overcome with emotion.

The letter, along with his latest photograph was handed over by the local sub-divisional magistrate, who had received it from officials of the Ministry of External Affairs at Patti near here.

Sarabjit has been sentenced to death by Pakistan's Supreme Court on charges of involvement in two blasts in that country and ``spying'' for India.

Sarabjit, in the letter written from the Kotlakhpat Rai Jail in Lahore, said: ``I am fine here in the jail and hope all the family members are hale and hearty.''

The letter, addressed to his sister Dalbir Kaur, also conveyed his love and regards for his wife, daughters and brother-in-law Baldev Singh. He also expressed his love for his neighbours and other members of Bikhiwind village.

Dalbir Kaur said that with the receipt of the letter, hopes of Sarabjit's homecoming had brightened. Besides, for the first time in 15 years, the family had been able to see the photograph of Sarabjit, she said. — PTI
