PONDICHERRY: A 27-year-old youth was arrested by the police for allegedly withdrawing Rs 2.5 lakhs from the account of a person after obtaining an ATM card through fraudulent means. The account holder a French pensioner had misplaced the passbook in the bank sometime ago. It was a joint account with her son. The youth, posing as the son of the French pensioner applied for the ATM card. The youth gave a particular address and managed to collect the card and started withdrawing money, B Srikanth, Additional Senior Superintendent of Police told reporters on Tuesday. Using the card the person withdrew money and bought a TV and jewellery. The fraud came to the notice of the bank when the son asked it to check the balance as his mother had died and the account was not operational, he said. Police enquiries revealed that there was negligence on the part of the nationalised bank.
Three arrested
Mr. Srikanth said that three people had been arrested on charges of trying to murder a man at Karauvadikuppam last week. The unused country bomb planted by the assailants went off a day after the incident killing one person. He said police were trying to find out is on to find out the source of the material used for making the bomb. The police are also seeking the enlistment of senior NCC cadets for night patrolling and traffic regulation. A request has been sent to the NCC office, he added.
