Students to spread awareness on conservation
T.S. Shankar
S. Kannaiyan
CHENNAI:
The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has embarked on an ambitious, countrywide project covering school and college students, to help increase awareness on conservation and protection of biological resources.
The NBA will organise lectures targeting the younger generation and utilise Information Technology, including distribution of compact discs among students, to achieve the objective.
Talking to The Hindu after inaugurating a one-day national-level interactive workshop on "Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Management related to Biodiversity," NBA Chairman S. Kannaiyan said officials, especially field staff of agriculture, animal sciences, fisheries, forestry and science and technology departments, would be covered under the programme.
While efforts were on to form local level biodiversity management committees, Prof. Kannaiyan said they had written to States urging them to set up State Biodiversity Boards. "We are projecting Madhya Pradesh as a role model. It has already set up a Biodiversity Board," he said.
Scientists, lawyers and experts in the field deliberated on IPR, Biodiversity and patent amendment at the workshop.
