Farm workers' plea to Government

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural Workers Union on Tuesday urged the State Government to implement the comprehensive social security scheme for farm hands and small and marginal farmers through the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Workers Welfare Board.

State general secretary of the union R. Mutharasan said farm workers were dismayed at the Government's failure in fully accepting the recommendations of the Kolappan Committee, submitted seven years ago. He demanded that the recommendations should be implemented in toto.

Mr. Mutharasan said though the Chief Minister had announced the decision to revise minimum wages for farm workers in the Assembly besides notifying it in the Gazette on July 8, the Government had not taken steps to implement it. He called for convening of tripartite meetings in all districts immediately to ensure that it is implemented.

Claiming that farmers, who had suffered due to unprecedented drought for four years, were not enthused to take up farming despite availability of adequate water for irrigation owing to paucity of funds, he pleaded for total crop loan waiver and issuance of fresh loan at Rs. 8,000 an acre. — Special Correspondent
