Rickety SETC buses The rickety State Express Transport Corporation buses cause nightmare to long-distance passengers. Usually, these buses are fitted with two seats on either side. Nowadays, old buses fitted with three seats on one side and two on the other, purchased from non-express transport corporations, are also put to use for express services. If private bus operators are given permission to launch services on long distance routes, the passengers will be given good service and facilities on a par with omni-bus services. They will also be a big challenge to omni-bus operators, who fix exorbitant fare. Will the government look into this? K.S. Pandian,

Scholarship
Physically challenged students studying in high and higher secondary schools are eligible for scholarship from the Social Welfare Department. For this, they have to submit a prescribed application form through the head of the institution, enclosing medical certificate and income certificate issued by doctors and revenue officials respectively. For getting these certificates, the students have to spend nearly 50 per cent of the scholarship money.
The head of the institution knows fully well about the deformity of students, and their parent's income to some extent. Hence, I suggest that the certificate issued by the school alone must be made sufficient to sanction scholarship to physically challenged students.

Pat for officials
On August 31, TNSTC and SETC buses were run as usual in Tirunelveli district, though some trade unions announced a one-day strike to express their dissatisfaction over the wage accord with the government. It is reported that officials of the TNSTC and SETC, Tirunelveli Division, stayed put in their offices during night to ensure the operation of normal bus services the following day.
Kudos to the transport officials of Tirunelveli junction. May such tribes grow in every office.

Railways
Kurumbur is one of the important railway stations on the Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli metre gauge line. Despite good patronage of the station by students and locals, basic amenities such as water and sanitation facilities are not sufficient there. This apart, it has only one platform, putting passengers to inconvenience.
I request the railway authorities to improve the infrastructure at the station.
