Swamy condemns price hike

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, on Tuesday condemned the decision to raise the prices of petrol and diesel. "India's petrol prices are already among the world's highest as a ratio of per capita income," he said in a statement. Fifty four per cent of the petrol prices were taxes of the Government.

"The Government needs to trim its own expenditure which would facilitate a reduction in taxes of the Government," Mr. Swamy said. "When they do not have enough funds to meet the crude oil prices, where will the funds come from for the rural employment scheme recently passed by Parliament," he wondered.
