TAKING NEW STRIDES: This year the equestrian show will be held in Bangalore from October 1 to 3.
BANGALORE: This one is strictly for those who love it on the saddle and for those who like to watch what others are riding. The Great Bangalore Horse Show 2005 will be held here from October 1 to 3, organised by the Princess Academy of Equitation in association with the South Indian Equestrian Association. According to the chairperson of the academy Meenakshi Devi, last year's event was attended by 25 riding schools in the country, with over 150 riders. This year, the event has been recognised by the Federation Equestre Internationale, Paris, making it an International event that will feature prominently in the federation's calendar. Set up in 1995, the Princess Academy has trained many young riders and promoted the sport in this region. The academy is known for its thoroughbred, half-bred and Indian bred Marwari horses and organises coaching camps for horse riding, show jumping, dressage and tent pegging. Internationally recognised and experienced instructors supervise these camps. Some of the thoroughbreds have even run on premier race courses.
Safaris
A spin-off of the Princess Academy is the horse safari trails, being organised in Mysore since 1999. The safaris start in Mysore and meander through villages and monuments. Along the way, those riding can see lakes, riverbeds, a bird sanctuary, waterfalls, ancient temples and different kinds of flora and fauna. The riders can even choose their own route. There are also one-day safaris from Bangalore to places such as Nandi Hills. If one wants to do more sight seeing and also take in some wilderness and a bit of adventurous riding, they can try the Bangalore- Savanadurga-Huliyadurga-Bramadevarahalli-Thannur Dam-Srirangapatnam route.
