Staff Reporter

HIGH COURTROUND-UP

KOCHI: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed Railways to take all possible measures for ensuring protection to the life and property of women travelling in ladies compartments in all trains running through the State.

The Bench comprising the Chief Justice Rajiv Gupta and Justice S. Siri Jagan issued the directives while disposing of a writ petition filed by R. Padmakumari, a lawyer in Kochi. The petitioner while narrating her own experience on a journey from Kasaragod to Kochi complained about the inadequate security being provided to women passengers travelling in ladies compartments.

Probe ordered

Justice A. K. Basheer on Tuesday directed the Director-General of Police (DGP) to entrust the investigation into the missing of Swamy Preethathmananda of the Sivarigi Madhom to an officer not below the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). The court also ordered that it was open to the DGP to constitute a special team, if it was found necessary. The court directed that the DIG should complete the investigation within two months. The directives were issued while disposing of a petition filed by M. B. Sreekumar, SNDP Yogam Devaswom Secretary.

Conviction set aside

A Bench comprising Justice K. Padmanabhan Nair and Justice V. Ramkumar set aside the Thalassery Ad hoc Sessions Court's verdict sentencing eight CPI (M) workers in Kannur to 10 years imprisonment and another worker to life imprisonment in a case relating to the murder of a BJP worker, C. Kelu. The court remitted back the case to the sessions judge for disposing the case afresh. The court set aside the lower court judgement while accepting the contention of the counsel for the accused.
