District panchayat poll: seven seats for DIC

Staff Reporter

153 file papers for 29 wards in Palakkad

  • CPI(M) submits nominations for 13 divisions in Malappuram
  • CPI has one seat less this time
  • 977 candidates for Palakkad block panchayats

MALAPPURAM: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) on Tuesday completed its seat adjustments for the district panchayat elections. The CPI(M) submitted nominations for 13 divisions, giving seven divisions to the Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran (DIC), four to CPI, three to Indian National League (INL), two to Janata Dal(S), and one each to NCP, Kerala Congress(J) and RSP.

The entry of K. Karunakaran's DIC has cost all LDF constituents one or more seats each. In the last elections, the CPI(M) had contested 16 seats of the 30 divisions. Despite an increase of two divisions (total 32 divisions), the CPI(M) has sacrificed three seats to accommodate the DIC and INL.

The CPI has one seat less this time, while the NCP has lost two, and the JD(S) and KC(J) one each. Although the CPI(M) said the list was complete, DIC leaders in the district said they had staked claim to one more seat.

The following are the CPI(M) candidates and their district panchayat divisions: V.V. Gopinath (Mangalam), V.P.S. Nambisan (Valancheri), Chathan V. (Pulamanthol), Saraswati Amma (Niramaratur), Joy K. Alex (Vazhikkadavu), Hajara Wandoor (Wandoor), K.T. Vinod Kumar (Tenhipalam), Koottayi Basheer (Changaramkulam), Devikutty (Tavanur), Attakoya Thangal (Angadipuram), Sreerama Krishna (Elamkulam), Palliyalil Nafeesa (Kondotty), and Shamsad Begum (Paravanna).

The CPI candidates are: P.P. Suneer (Marancheri), K.T. Koulath (Kuttippuram), K. Mohandas (Kottakkal), and M.A. Suhail (Cheekkode).

The seven candidates of the DIC are: Sajita P.V. (Nilambur), Valsala T. (Parappanangadi), Jaya Madhuraj (Makkarapparamba), Adattil Koya (Edarikkode), K.P. Noushad Ali (Edavanna), Anandan M. (Kuzhimanna), and Madhu Anand (Vazhakkad). The party has staked claim to Changaramkulam division. Mecheri Saidalavi (Ponmundam) and Thanka N.C. (Pookkottur) are the Janata Dal(S) candidates. V.T. Baby (Karuvarakundu) and Alice Mathew (Muthedam) will represent Kerala Congress(J) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) respectively.
