KANNUR: Two candidates of the CPI(M) were on Tuesday arrested in connection with a case relating to the murder of RSS activist Sooraj.

The arrested are CPI(M) Muzhappilangad local secretary V. Prabhakaran and member in the outgoing Muzhappilangad grama panchayat K.V. Padmanabhan.

They were arrested after they filed their nomination papers before the returning officer at the Muzhappilangad panchayat office at around 11.30 a.m.

A large posse of police personnel had been posted outside the panchayat office since Monday.

The two CPI(M) local leaders were named in the list of accused in the murder case. The RSS activist had been murdered at Muzhappilangad on August 7.

118 papers filed

A total 118 nomination papers were filed for the election to the District panchayat.

This included 67 nominations filed on the last day of filing papers on Tuesday. Many of those who filed their papers for the election were dummy candidates.

A total 642 nomination papers were submitted for the elections to nine block panchayats in the district.

This included 62 nominations in Kannur, 78 in Payyannur, 93 in Taliparamba, 85 in Peravur, 55 in Thalassery, 60 in Koothuparamba, 59 in Edakkad, 74 in Irikkur and 79 in Iritty.

RSP to keep away

The Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) district committee decided not to contest the local body elections in the district. RSP district secretary Illikkal Agasthy in a statement here said that the party had not been shown the courtesy as a coalition partner in the LDF and its genuine demands rejected in the seat-sharing discussions.

This was in contravention of the LDF instruction that the interests of front partners be protected in the seat allocation process and to protect the interests of political parties outside the LDF, he said.
