HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party will contest over 2,000 seats in the coming municipal elections. Bandaru Dattatreya, national secretary, told a press conference here on Tuesday that the party would go it alone in most of the seats. However, there were some places where it was supporting independents, like in a ward in Warangal, where a former vice-chancellor, Vidyavathi, had sought BJP support.
Campaign in full swing
Mr. Dattatreya said the party was going full steam ahead with its election campaign. BJP activists were spreading awareness among people about the Congress policies towards BCs and the way it was proceeding with 5 per cent reservations for Muslims. The former Union minister alleged that intimidatory tactics by Congress leaders had led to partymen not filing nominations in districts such as Anantapur and Kadapa. "With the death of Telugu Desam MLA, Paritala Ravi, we thought an end had been put to violence in Anantapur district, however, the Minister for Panchayat Raj, J.C. Diwakar Reddy, and his supporters are were resorting to intimidatory tactics," he said. In Kadapa district, especially Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's native place, Pulivendula, and Jammalamadugu, Mr. Dattatreya said, Congress activists had created "fear psychosis." This had led to several people, wishing to contest on BJP ticket, deciding not to even file nominations, he said.
