YSR greets people

The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Tuesday greeted Telugus both in India and abroad, on the eve of Vinayaka Chaturthi.

Seven held on robbery charge

ONGOLE: Police have arrested seven persons and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs. 7 lakhs at

Kanigiri on Tuesday.

According to the police, a six-member gang involved in eight offences in Kanigiri, Pamuru and Chandrasekhara Puram in Prakasam district where they stole gold ornaments worth Rs. 5 lakhs.

In another case, the police arrested one person working in a jewellery shop in Podili where he committed theft of gold ornaments worth Rs. 2.1 lakhs. - Special Correspondent

Students' protest disrupts traffic

KADAPA: Traffic movement was disrupted for about two hours at Narsapuram in Kasinayana mandal with management representatives of educational institutions, students and Dalit organisations staging a dharna before the MRO office resenting non-stoppage of RTC buses on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

Canal develops breach

KURNOOL : The Srisailam Right Branch Canal (SRBC) breached near Owk in Kurnool district on Tuesday. The canal developed about three feet wide whole where the canal flow was around 500 cusecs. The irrigation officials swung into action to close the breach. - Staff Reporter

AIR programmes

Rajahmundry: All-India Radio, Visakhapatnam, will air two special programmes from next Saturday with a title `Godavari Teeram' and `Sahiti Teeram'. The programme executive of AIR, Nagasoori Venugopal, said on Tuesday that the programmes related to the importance of Rajahmundry, river Godavari and the Telugu literary giants from this area. Rape charge against two

Sangareddy: A forty-year-old married woman was raped by two men in an autorickshaw near Allana factory in Zaheerabad town on Monday night.

The woman, a native of Pastapur village, works as a construction labourer in the town and her boss put her into the autorickshaw along with another worker Amrit and asked him to safely drop her at her residence. Amrit along with the driver Rahim took her to a secluded place near the Allana abattoir and allegedly raped her. Both the accused persons were taken into custody. - Staff Reporter

Woman throws infant into well

Rajahmundry : A mother has thrown her 10-month-old baby into a well, suspecting that the child is infected with HIV positive. Gorripudi village in Karapa mandal was witness to this on Monday, but the police did not find any evidence whether the baby boy was infected with HIV or not. Primary investigation has revealed that the mother Chintaluri Kumari's claim about the baby's disease was incorrect.

Naxalites kill photographer

GUNTUR: The Communist Party of India (Maoist) naxalites killed a freelance photographer in Sirigiripadu village of Veldurthi mandal of Guntur on Tuesday afternoon branding him police informer.

Three Maoists came to the village at 1.30 p.m. and called the 28-year-old photographer, Kukkamalla Ashok, out of his house in the Mettameedapalle Colony of the village and shot him dead from close range. - Staff Reporter

Lecturer's house burgled

KADAPA: Burglars broke into the house of a chemistry lecturer in Vasavi junior college, K. Sudarshan Reddy, in Vempalle town in the wee hours of Tuesday and decamped with 18 tolas of gold, Rs. 90,000 and some silk sarees, valued at about Rs. 1.90 lakhs.

Burglars removed an iron grill of the kitchen window, when the inmates were asleep, according to the police.

Pulivendula DSP, Venkatarami Reddy, inspected the house and clues team members collected finger prints. A case was registered. - Staff Reporter

Nellore: Two persons were killed in separate cases in the district on Monday. While a person in Kottaguntapalem village of Chittamuru mandal died reportedly after being bitten by a poisonous creature, another person died due to lightning in Jangaladoruvu village of Sangam mandal. - Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: A two-wheeler rider allegedly snatched Rs. 4,500 from the attendant in a petrol filling station belonging to R.J. Ratnakar Raju, the nephew of Satya Saibaba, near the Puttaparthi airport on Tuesday morning. - Staff Reporter

BSNL rates

Nellore: The authorities of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Nellore, have informed that all calls from the fixed network of BSNL to Reliance Infocom (level 3 numbers) within Andhra Pradesh, will be charged at 45 second pulse with immediate effect. This applies to trunk calls and calls made from local/STD/ISD/PCOs.

It has been informed that two new recharge coupons— Top Up 200 (sale value Rs. 220- and Top up 500 (sale value Rs. 551) were introduced. The value of talk time is Rs. 220 and Rs. 500 respectively and there will not be any change in validity period due to these recharge coupons. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on Monday arrested an assistant engineer of Roads and Buildings, B. Nithyanandam, al division, on charge of accepting Rs. 5,000 bribe from a complainant. HYDERABAD: The Special Judge for SPE and ACB Cases, Nellore, sentenced a former Inspector of Prohibition and Excise Department, V. Hanumantha Rao, to undergo simple imprisonment for six months and pay Rs. 500 following his conviction in a corruption case. ACB officials arrested Rao on April 17 of 1996, on charge of accepting Rs. 3,000 bribe from a complainant, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter

Lok Satta's advice to voters

Kakinada: The city unit of Lok Satta on Tuesday hailed political parties for giving due representation to women in the municipal elections, but expressed dissatisfaction with tickets to womenfolk of the same families which were elected earlier. One dies as auto rams into hut

Kakinada: A 20-year-old man was killed and his mother and two sisters were injured when a goods auto lost control and rammed into a hut in which they were fast asleep late on Monday.
