Four taken ill after consuming liquor

KOTTAYAM: Four persons were admitted to Kottayam Medical College Hospital on Tuesday with vomiting and other symptoms after consuming liquor. According to early reports, the four, one of them an employee of a toddy shop at Nanadom near Vaikom, had consumed Indian Made Foreign Liquor brought to the shop by one of them. They were first taken to Vaikom Taluk Hospital. Antappan and his friends Shibu, Thankachan and Babu are the victims. The police have registered a case, and investigation is on, the authorities said. — Staff Reporter

Special train to Egmore

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A special train will be run between Thiruvananthapuram Central and Chennai Egmore on Saturday to clear the extra rush of passengers, according to press release. Train No. 0632 Thiruvananthapuram-Egmore Special will leave Central at 1.30 p.m. on Saturday and reach Egmore at 7.30 a.m. the next day via Nagercoil, Madurai, Tiruchi and Villupuram. — Staff Reporter

Pattikkanthodi

award

Thrissur: The Chenda maestro Kalamandalam Kesavan has been selected for this year's Pattikkanthodi Puraskaram, instituted by the Pattikkanthodi Smaraka Samithy. The award, carrying a purse of Rs.5,000 and citation, will be presented at a function at Kerala Kalamandalam on September 18, a press release said. — Staff Reporter

Extra sugar for Onam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All ration-card holders, irrespective of APL or BPL considerations, will be given 1 kg of special sugar in connection with Onam. The Civil Supplies Corporation has made arrangements for distributing the sugar from Tuesday. The Government asked ration card holders to buy the sugar before Onam. — Special Correspondent

Dam shutter opened

PALAKKAD: The four shutters of the Malampuzha Dam were opened on Tuesday as the water crossed the maximum level of 114.9 metres. The dam was opened after a gap of seven years. The authorities had issued the final warning on Monday following heavy rain in the catchment areas for the last one week. Since Monday, water was released to the canals for paddy cultivation. — Staff Reporter

Students cautioned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Kerala Nurse and Midwives Council has cautioned students studying in institutions without the recognition of the Indian or State Nursing Councils. In a press note here on Monday, it said such students would not be eligible for employment in Kerala, other States or abroad. It asked the students to find out from the council the status of the institutions before joining them. The note was issued in the wake of reports that some institutions without recognition were attracting students by promising employment abroad. — Special Correspondent

KSEB arrangements

KOLLAM: The Kollam Electrical Circle of the KSEB has taken all possible measures for quick rectification of faults during the Onam festival period. In this regard, a meeting of electrical circle officers was held here on Monday. The Deputy Chief Engineer of the electrical circle, K. Radhakrishnan, has said that maintenance and other measures to avoid major faults have already been undertaken. Special arrangements to summon the staff for duty in case of any emergency have also been made. — Staff Reporter

Seminar

KOLLAM: The Jan Shikshan Sansthan is organising a seminar here on September 8 to observe World Literacy Day. The programme is being organised in association with the P. N. Panikkar Foundation. The poet Thirunellur Karunakaran will inaugurate the seminar at the Sopanam Auditorium. The inaugural function will be presided over by the member of the National Khadi Board N. Shakespearean play to be staged

Thrissur: The Physical Theatre Department of the Swedish Polytechnic will stage `A Midsummer Night's Dream' at the Regional Theatre here on September 10 under the aegis of the Thalam Cultural Trust.

The play, directed by Maya Tangberg, will feature 12 artistes, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter
