In Alappuzha
Staff Reporter writes from Alappuzha: The CPI(M) filed nomination papers in 19 divisions of the district panchayat on Monday, the last day for filing nominations for local body polls. CPI(M) district secretary G. Sudhakaran said the candidates who filed nominations included T.P. Mangalamma from Kanjikkuzhy, R. Nassar from Mararikkulam, G. Harisankar from Tazhakkara and K. Raghuprasad from Nooranad. He said the CPI(M) district committee had decided to contest in 14 of the 23 district panchayat divisions. Nine seats would be allocated to the other LDF constituents or those parties including the Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran (DIC) that oppose both the BJP and the UDF. In the context, it is evident that some of the CPI(M) candidates may withdraw their nominations. According to District Congress Committee president C.R. Jayaprakash, UDF candidates have filed nominations in all the 23 district panchayat divisions here. The Congress is contesting in 16 district panchayat divisions. UDF candidates filed nominations in all the municipal, block and grama panchayat seats in the district, he said. Mr. Jayaprakash said the seat allocation and candidate fixation were done without any trouble. DIC district president M.J. Job said his party had reached an understanding with the CPI(M) in several panchayats and almost all the municipalities in the district. He said discussions were going on and a clear picture would emerge soon.
