NEW DELHI: "India's cultural renaissance must be accorded its rightful place in the emerging global society," said Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) president Karan Singh at the launch of "At Home in the World" here on Tuesday. "This book will play an invaluable role in fostering a symbiotic cultural relationship between India and the rest of the world." Noting that works written in many Indian languages had to be translated into English to be accessible to the rest of the world, Dr. Singh said, "The nuances of language must not be lost in translation as it was when `sub kuchch mangal' was translated as `everything is Tuesday'!" Launching the book, Union External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh said, "The Ministry is not allowed to buy my own books and distribute them, however, I will ensure that the Prime Minister and others are provided with copies of `At Home in the World' to present to distinguished foreigners." Over two years in the making, the book is the end product of the first International Festival of Indian Literature held in 2002. The editors have distilled conversations between participants from the Festival to deliver the essence of their thoughts and ideas about modern Indian literary culture. Reading as a who's who of Indian literature, the participants include Amitav Ghosh, Dom Moraes, Vikram Seth, Indrani Goswami and V.S. Naipaul.
