DEHRA DUN: In a series of midnight raids, the city police arrested over 100 persons for selling or having liquor in restaurants operating as illegal bars. The restaurant owners have been challaned and the customers let off on personal bonds. In an innovative move, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Sanjay Gunjyal, asked all officers and station house officers to switch off their mobile phones, forcing the petty politicians to go to police stations to seek release of the restaurant owners known to them. As the SSP and other officials could not be contacted, the "political friends" had to hang around the police stations till the culprits were booked and released after the necessary formalities. "The raids were necessary as complaints of indecent behaviour by drunkards had been received from residents of various areas," Mr Gunjyal said.
