CHENNAI: Colour Cotton India has organised an exhibition-cum-sale of textiles, saris, black metal, carvings in wood and marble, jute bags, Hyderabad pearls and imitation jewellery at Sri Sankara Hall on TTK Road, Alwarpet.

The gold-plated jewellery items include chains, chokers, designer bangles, earrings, necklaces and rings. They are available in traditional and Western styles. `Chokers' are available in a variety of designs in plated gold and in silver, with and without stones.

Lacquer bangles in sparkling colours are sold by Ganpat Lal Varma, who runs a small-scale industry in Jaipur. He has artisans working on metal and lacquer. There are myriad designs with stones, meena work or floral designs.

According to Mr. Varma, about five sets can be created in a day. The necklace-stud sets are available in a range of designs in delicate and bold styles.

Haraprasad Misra, an artisan from Orissa, has put up for sale paintings on a sheet of chalk powder and tamarind seeds. He has recreated with vegetable colours the Ramayana, Krishnaleela, battle scenes, picturesque scenery and animals.

There are also palm leaves depicting the Ramayana. He uses an iron needle to engrave the images. There are stone idols priced between Rs. 200 and Rs. 45,000 and coffee mugs and porcelain sets by Asif Ali from Khurja, Uttar Pradesh.

The speciality is the `jilebi' design on mugs, utensils, pots and cups. Asif Ali, who has made them, says these pieces can be used in microwave ovens too.

Exhibition organiser Ratan Singh, who has brought artisans from Uttar Pradesh, has put up 60 stalls.

The exhibition will be open between 10 a.m. and 9. p.m. on all days until September 13.
