People told to prevent water pollution

Special Correspondent

  • People urged not to immerse idols in water bodies
  • Metallic components of the paints pollute the water making it harmful for consumption
  • Appeal suggests that idols painted with vegetable-based paints be bought

MANGALORE: The Karantaka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) here has appealed to people to take steps to ensure that Vinayaka Chaturthi is celebrated without polluting water bodies in towns and villages.

According to the written appeal, Ganesha idols are generally painted with metallic paints containing lead and chromium, which are toxic and pollute the water bodies, when idols are immersed into them. Consumption of this water will have serious effects on the health, the appeal added.

The appeal suggested that those idols painted with vegetable-based natural colours be bought and immersed in a bucket of water.
