Yakshagana artiste Jogi wins Asranna award

MANGALORE: The Kateelu Gopalakrishna Asranna Shishyavrunda, Kadri Kambala here, has selected eminent Thenkuthittu Yakshagana artiste Manjeshwar Janardhan Jogi for the prestigious Asranna Award 2005. The award has been instituted in the memory of late Gopalakrishna Asranna, who was managing trustee of the Kateel Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple, who was popular among his followers.

The award consists of a gold pendant embossed with the image of Goddess Brahmarambike, a scroll of honour, and a memento. Past recipients of this award include Nedle Narasimha Bhat, Ira Gopalakrishna Bhagawatha, Kadandelu Purushottam Bhat, Padre Chandru, Kedagadi Guddappa Gowda, Kolyaru Ramachandra Rao, Nellikatte Narayana Hasyagar, Renjal Ramakrishna Rao, and Puttur Krishna Bhat.

Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, convener of the Shishyvrunda, told presspersons here on Tuesday that Mr. Jogi has been associated with the Aadi Subramanya, Venur, Suratkal and Sunkadakatte mela in the past. He has been associated with the famous Sri Kateel Mela for past 17 years as its chief veshadhari, and is renowned for portraying characters such as Athikaya, Indrajit, Rakthabeeja, Vamara, and Kamsa.

Mr. Jogi will receive the award at the Kateel Gopalakrishna Asranna Samsmarane function to be held at the Gopalakrishna Asranna Memorial Hall, Kateel, on Saturday. K.K. Pai, chairman of the Dr. T.M.A. Pai Foundation, Manipal, will preside over the function. M. Lakshminarayana, Rotary District Governor, will inaugurate the function, Mr. Kalkura said.

Ramanath Hegde, managing trustee of Mangaladevi Temple, Mangalore, will felicitate Mr. Jogi. Mr. Kalkura will deliver the remembrance address.
