TAMBARAM: A three-member gang armed with knives assaulted and robbed an aged couple of cash and gold jewellery at Tambaram Sanatorium in the early hours on Tuesday, but were nabbed an hour after the crime by police on night patrol. The gang barged into the house of K. Srinivasan, 69, and his wife Prema staying in Sundaram Colony Second Street, Tambaram Sanatorium by breaking open a rear door of the house. They assaulted the couple, threatened them at knifepoint and snatched gold jewellery weighing nearly 10 sovereigns worn by them. They also took away about Rs. 4,000 cash from the house. Mr. Srinivasan said the gangsters entered their house around 1 a.m. One of them grabbed him by the throat and held a knife to his face. "They snatched the gold chain I was wearing and took away a couple of chains from my wife, including the thaali." The gangsters, on leaving the house, bolted the door from outside, as also those of their tenants so that none could come out. "I rang up the city police control room (100) and within ten minutes a couple of policemen came to my house. About two hours later, an officer, Thirugnanam came to my house and told me that the jewellery were recovered," he said, still in a state of shock. (R. Thirugnanam, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Triplicane, was on night patrol in the city on Monday.) P. Thamaraikannan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, St. Thomas Mount district, said that soon after receiving the call, the Chromepet police station and those on night rounds in the area were alerted. The policemen blanketed the area and after combing it, zeroed in on two of the culprits who were hiding in one of the houses in the same locality. While Madan and Shankar were arrested, the third, Nagaraj, managed to escape. The two are involved in several crime cases and have been detained under the Goondas Act on more than one occasion. The entire stolen property was recovered and would be handed over to the family, Mr. Thamaraikannan added. Sub-inspectors Venkatesan and Thangam and constables Ranganathan and Samraj who were instrumental in nabbing the accused received cash incentives.
