Want recommendations of Running Allowance Committee, 2002 scrapped

TAMBARAM: Members of the Southern Railway Employees Sangh (SRES) held a protest at the Tambaram railway station on Tuesday against the recommendations of the Running Allowance Committee (RAC), 2002. Among other things, it has proposed a reduction in their pension benefits.

The RAC was set up following the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission.

Its proposals, submitted in 2002, went against the interests of the running staff — drivers of passenger and goods trains, guards and loco inspectors.

Not only were they forced to work longer hours, but their "per 100 kilometres allowance" was also drastically reduced, the SRES members said.

Longer hours

According to them, the RAC had brought down the allowance from Rs. 84 for every 100 kilometres to Rs. 75.
