CHENNAI: Some of the exhibits at the 36th annual competition organised by Victoria Technical Institute as part of the Mahatma Gandhi birth centenary celebrations leave a visitor breathless. Take, for instance, a painting by Chennai-based artist G. Suresh Kumar: it depicts an African woman bending over a strange creature washed ashore. This creature, with the face of a fish has the body of a woman. The exhibition in-charge said, "The artist said he had read about it somewhere and had decided to depict it as it appeared." The Sri Hari Maha Vishnu, carved on rosewood is the work of B.S. Rajendran of Kerala. It took him three years to make the piece, priced Rs. 4 lakhs.
Canvas for Rs. 15,000
V. Nirandharan has reproduced on canvas the new buildings of the Government General Hospital. The painting is priced at Rs. 15,000. In K. Karthikeyan's painting, a golden peacock's green feathers come from a house broom. S. Karthikeyan's `Peak hours' depicts a newspaper through which cows seem to rush through a street, blocking traffic. About 705 works by 295 artists from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry have been displayed. The exhibits have been classified as bronze, kalamkari, paintings, carvings on stone, wood, inlay and relief work, embroidery and other types of crafts. The institute's council members will vote for the best entry and a cash award of Rs. 20,000 will be given. Ten outstanding exhibits will receive cash awards of Rs. 5,000 each.
Master craftspersons
The institute has honoured 267 master craftspersons and artists. The exhibition, which was inaugurated by A. Elangovan, secretary, handlooms, handicrafts, textiles and khadi, will be on from 9.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and up to 2 p.m. on Saturdays till October 2 at VTI.
