1 lakh women sign petition for reservation

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: : Over one lakh women signed a petition calling upon the Government to pass the Women's Reservation Bill, hanging fire for many years despite the support by major parties.

Members of the Working Women's Forum, led by its president Jaya Arunachalam, presented the petition to Governor Surjit Singh Barnala on Monday.

The women questioned why there were delays in passing the Bill, despite this consensus, and alleged that those demanding a quota for the Backward Classes and Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes and minorities were trying to divide women on the lines of caste and religion. If such divisions were seriously being thought of, it would defeat the very purpose of the Bill, they said.

Earlier, a group of women, led by Ms. Jaya Arunachalam, went on a `peaceful protest' walk from Rajaji Salai. It wound its way till the Governor's residence.
