Three labourers killed in blast at quarry

BANGALORE: Three labourers were killed in a blast at a stone quarry in Hebbugodi police station limits in Bangalore Rural District on Tuesday.

Police said the labourers had put gelatine sticks connected to a detonator to cause an explosion to break the rocks at a quarry at Mylasandra village.

When the explosion did not take place on time, the labourers tried to meddle with the explosives.

There was a sudden explosion and three labourers were killed on the spot. Their bodies were almost blown into pieces, police said.

The names of the dead were given as Narasappa (45), and Shekarappa (25) both from Kustagi taluk in Koppal district, and Murugan (25) of Salem district in Tamil Nadu. The Hebbugodi police have registered a case of negligence leading to death against the proprietor of the quarry Paparaju. The police said they will take the help of explosives expert in investigating the case.

Auto driver hacked

An autorickshaw driver was hacked to death in J.P. Nagar police station limits in the early hours of Tuesday. Police said that around 1.30 a.m., Zameer alias Babu (27) was found lying in a pool of blood on 24th Main, 1st Phase, J.P. Nagar, off Puttenahalli. An autorickshaw driver, who saw an unconscious Zameer, alerted the police.

Zameer, who was rushed to NIMHANS, died there. The assailants had hit Zameer, a resident of Sarebandepalya, on the head and face with iron rods. The motive behind the murder is not known, the police said.

Two killed

Two persons, including a software engineer, were killed in separate road accidents in the city on Monday.

Police said P.R. Sandeep (22), a software engineer and a resident of BTM Layout, was killed when a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus hit the motorcycle he was riding on Hosur Road, off Koodlu Gate. The Madivala traffic police have arrested the driver and seized the bus.

In the other incident, Abraham Nitin (17) of Vaddarapalya in Horamavu was killed after the motorcycle he was riding rammed an autorickshaw near Nehru junction in Banaswadi around 9.45 p.m. The police said Nitin, who first hit a pedestrian, fell after ramming an autorickshaw and suffered head injuries. He died on the way to a hospital.

Body found

A decomposed body of an unidentified man was found floating in the Pantharapalya tank, of Nayandahalli, on Tuesday. The police suspect the man could have been washed away in the flash floods caused by the heavy rains on Sunday. The Byatarayanapura police have registered a case.
