Eye specialist Siva Reddy is dead

The country has lost a dedicated ophthalmologist, says Chief Minister

HYDERABAD: Perugu Siva Reddy (85), eminent ophthalmologist and Honorary Adviser to the State Government, died early on Tuesday in a private hospital here, following a heart problem caused by a leg fracture and subsequent surgery. He is survived by wife and daughter.

Dr. Reddy graduated in 1946 from Madras University and after his post-graduation in 1952 from Andhra University, was a teacher for over three decades. He trained more than 500 post-graduates who are now reputed ophthalmic surgeons in India and abroad. He was Director, Institute of Ophthalmology and Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital for 16 years and played a major role in the institution's development.

YSR condoles death

He was a member of several national and international institutions and recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award, and the Padma Bhushan. He was Honorary Surgeon to successive Presidents since the late V.V. Giri.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy expressed deep shock at the death of the renowned eye surgeon. In a message, he said Dr. Reddy had pioneered the eye camp approach in the rural areas. He helped the common man in accessing advanced treatment as well as cataract operations. He said the country had lost a dedicated ophthalmologist and a humanist, conveying his condolences to members of the bereaved family. The message said Reddy achieved the unique distinction of performing more than three lakh cataract operations and conducting 500 eye camps. He was instrumental in setting up the first eye bank in India and helped establish regional eye hospitals in Visakhapatnam, Warangal and Kurnool.

Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the death.

The State Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association expressed grief at the sudden death of Reddy. C. Subrahmanyam, president, and office-bearers in a statement said the eminent ophthalmologist had rendered yeoman service to society.
