NEW DELHI: Reacting strongly to the Central Government's decision to hand over the prestigious University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) here to the Delhi Government, the student and teaching community of the college has described the transfer of power and control as "unacceptable'' and a violation of the Delhi University statutes. One main reason for the opposition is the belief that the handing over of the college from Delhi University to the Delhi Government would result in unnecessary political and administrative interference in its working. The faculty and students are now planning to form an action committee to raise the issue. Established by Delhi University in 1971 for medical education and research, UCMS currently admits 100 students for its undergraduate MBBS course and 50 for the postgraduate degree course for M.D. and M.S every year through a Delhi University Medical Entrance Test. "In its 35 years of existence, we have struggled to prove our excellence. From being shuttled between Safdarjung Hospital and Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital to now being handed over to a State Government, things have not been good for us, '' said a teacher.
