Delhi power crisis worsens

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The power crisis in the Capital worsened further on Tuesday as the Delhi Transco Limited faced a shortfall of almost 550 MW due to closure of various generating units in the region supplying power to the Northern Grid. As a result, people across the city have been facing long hours of unscheduled power cuts since Monday and the situation is likely to remain grim for a few more days.

On Monday, the shortfall in supply was of about 400 MW that rose to 550 MW on Tuesday, while the peak demand also registered an increase from 2,860 to 3,006 MW. The shortage in supply has affected parts of East, South and Outer Delhi the most, while complaints of power cuts and local faults were also reported from other areas.

According to a Transco spokesperson, the entire Northern region has been facing a severe power crisis as the shortfall to the Northern Grid has reached almost 5,000 MW due to closure of various generating units in the region including the shutting down of the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri hydroelectricity plant at Himachal Pradesh.

Another major reason for the crisis in Delhi is the closure of at least one unit each at Rajghat and Indraprastha plants generating at least 125 MW of power. Similarly, the 210 MW-unit at Badarpur thermal plant is also lying idle for the past few days.
