This Day That Age
The President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, at a special investiture at Rashtrapathi Bhavan on September 7 conferred the award of Bharat Ratna on the Prime Minister, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Bhagwan Das and Dr. M. Visvesvaraya. The Home Secretary, Mr. A.V. Pai, read out the names of the recipients. The citation were not read presumably with the idea of making the ceremony very brief. The official book of citations merely mentions the name of the Prime Minister and understandably refrains from making any reference to the services rendered by Mr. Nehru. It would have easily taken volumes to describe with adequate justice his role in moulding India's destiny and his achievements in the cause of world peace. It was, therefore, considered inappropriate to sum up Mr. Nehru's record in a few lines. The gathering burst into thunderous cheers as Mr. Nehru was conducted to the dais where the President greeted him and presented the medal and sanad of Bharat Ratna. Next to receive the decoration of Bharat Ratna were Dr. Bhagwan Das of Banaras and Dr. M. Visvesvaraya. Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon and Mr. J.R.D. Tata were awarded the Padma Vibhushan. Those who were awarded the Padma Bhushan were: Smt. Rameshwari Nehru and Messrs. Fateh Chand Badhwar, S.K. Chatterji, V.R. Khanolkar, S.D. Khungar, M.S. Thacker and A.R. Venkata Acharya. Those awarded the Padma Shri were: Smt. Mary Clubwala Jadhav, Smt. Zarina Currimbhoy, Smt. Rattan Shastri and Messrs. S.N. Kaul, Kewal Singh Choudhury, M.P. Mehray, Habib-ur-Rahman, Laxmi Narayan Sahu and Onkar Nath Thakore.
